Welcome

Your guide to the Data Hub

Everything on this site exists to answer one question: does this help Aberdeen win? There are no stat dumps for the sake of it. Every page tells you what the numbers actually mean. Here is a two-minute tour.

New here? Start with xG

xG (expected goals) is the one number worth understanding. Every shot is scored from 0 to 1 on how likely it was to go in, based on where it was taken. A tap-in might be 0.7, a hopeful 30-yarder 0.03. Add up a team’s shots and you get how many goals their chances were worth. That is a fairer read of a game than the scoreline, which one lucky bounce can swing. Most of the hub builds on it.

The match report

Every game, told as a story

latest →

Open any match and it reads top to bottom like a report, not a spreadsheet.

  • The hero. Score, xG beneath it, and one verdict (Dominant, Deserved win, Tight game, Fortunate win, and so on).
  • Match in 30 seconds. The three most notable things that happened, picked automatically.
  • Result verdict. Was it deserved or lucky, on a five-point scale, with a plain-English “how much of this was luck?” read.
  • Match Story. The whole game on one chart: xG building for both sides, goals, cards and subs, with Aberdeen above the line and the opponent below. Toggle between the running total and every individual shot.
  • How it was won or lost. The key numbers grouped into chance creation, territory and defending, each next to the season average.
  • Player performance. Player of the Match, standouts, and the starting XI on a pitch with ratings.
  • Where it ranks. How the display stacked up against Aberdeen’s other games this season.

The words you’ll see

xG (expected goals): how many goals the chances were worth. Higher means better chances created.
xGA (expected goals against): the same for the opposition’s chances. Lower is better.
xGD (expected goal difference): xG minus xGA. Positive means Aberdeen created the better chances.
xGOT (expected goals on target): chance quality including how well the shot was struck and placed.
Big chance: a clear, should-score opportunity.
PPDA (passes per defensive action): how aggressively a team presses. Lower means pressing harder.
Field tilt: the share of play in the opposition half, a measure of territory. Higher means more on top.
xT (expected threat): how much a pass or move increases the chance of scoring soon after.
Progressive pass: a pass that moves the ball meaningfully closer to the opponent’s goal.
Expected points: the points a performance deserved, based on the xG. Set against the points actually taken, it shows luck.

The full detail on how every number is worked out lives on the Methodology and Glossary pages.

A few tips

  • • Most analysis pages have filters up top for Manager, Season and Venue, so you can ask things like “how do we press away under this manager?”
  • • Colour is consistent. Green is good, red is weak, and it knows that lower is better for things like goals conceded.
  • • It all works on your phone. Sections stack and the key numbers stay up top.
  • • Spot something off? There is a Report a bug link in the footer of every page.

That is the tour. Dive in from the menu and enjoy following the season through the numbers. Come on you Reds.
